Instructor: Dongwook Lee (dlee79 _at _ ucsc _dot_ edu), Applied Mathematics and Statistics

Office: Baskin Engineering 353C

Office Hours: Friday 4 pm - 5 pm (or by appointment)

Lectures: Mon, Wed, & Fri 1:20 pm - 2:25 pm at BE 169

Major reading materials: Online class materials & Numerical methods for conservation laws -- R. J. LeVeque (Birkhauser)

Other supplementary reading materials:

  • Finite volume methods for hyperbolic problems -- R. J. LeVeque (Cambridge)
  • Riemann solvers and numerical methods for fluid dynamics -- E. F. Toro (Springer)
  • Computational fluid dynamics -- J. D. Anderson (McGraw-Hill)
  • Computational gasdynamics -- C. B. Laney (Cambridge)
  • Fundamentals of computational fluid dynamics -- H. Lomax, T. H. Pulliman, D. W. Zingg (Springer)
  • Journal papers on computational methods

Course Objectives: This course introduces advanced graduate students to modern computational approaches for solving differential equations that arise in fluid dynamics, particularly for problems involving discontinuities and shock waves. Fundamentals of the mathematical foundations and computational solutions will be examined.

Homework (60%): There are total of 6 homework problem sets on both mathematical theories and computer programming. There is a policy on any late homework submission -- you are going receive a maximum of 80% if late by less than a day; 50% if late by more than a day. Students are strongly encouraged to submit their homework electronically in pdf (no word documents).

Final-term computer programming project (40%): Due Tue 21, 2017 -- A fnial project will be written up in a professional style using LaTeX and submitted as a pdf file. It is expected that the quality of this project -- of the students choosing in consultation with the instructor -- will go beyond the level required for the other computer homework assignments.

Students with disabilities:

If you qualify for classroom accommodations because of a disability, please get an Accommodation Authorization from the Disability Resource Center (DRC) and submit it to me in person outside of class (e.g., office hours) within the first two weeks of the quarter. Contact DRC at 459-2089 (voice), 459-4806 (TTY), or http://drc.ucsc.edu for more information on the requirements and/or process.
